A Lovely Harmless Monster

A questionnaire

Still hard at work on the new project. Also been playing lots of Wizardry; I started playing the first one. As in, the first first one, on the Apple ][. I'm keeping a little play diary of my time with it; not a full-blown "Let's Play", I'm not documenting every detail of my time with it, but it might still be of interest to some. Right now I've just been posting it on fedi:

Eventually it's going to be on my new website. That's the big project, a new website. Very exciting.

I don't really watch talk shows, but I saw Sylvie at departure.blog post this questionnaire that talk show host Stephen Colbert asks his guests, and thought the questions might be fun to answer. So that's what this post is.

1. What's the best sandwich?

Can't go wrong with a grilled cheese.

2. What was your first concert?

If you mean concert as in "any musical performance I went to on purpose", it was a Dog Fashion Disco show at a local bar around 2003. If you mean concert as in "any musical performance in an auditorium or stadium", probably some school field trip I don't remember. If you mean "any musical performance in an auditorium or stadium I went to on purpose", it was a 2007 Mountain Stage performance with They Might Be Giants, Regina Spektor, and some other bands I didn't have any interest in. They released that show as a podcast, click here if you wanna listen (cw: ads)

3. What’s one thing you own you should really throw out?

I'm not sure. I tend to throw things out pretty readily. I don't like accumulating a bunch of stuff. Maybe an old water bottle with a built-in filter I don't use cuz it's a pain the ass to keep it clean.

4. What is the scariest animal?

The scariest animal I'm likely to actually encounter is a house centipede. Those things look engineered to provoke cosmic horror. Obviously I'd be more properly terrorized if I was in proximity to a jaguar or rhinoceros, but when is that ever going to happen?

5. Apples or oranges?

Apples; oranges are too messy and have a weird texture.

6. Have you ever asked someone for their autograph?

Leo Laporte, but it was at a meet-and-greet/autograph-signing event so it wasn't that unusual. I don't think I'd ever initiate an autograph request.

7. Favorite smell?

I don't know that I have one. Sylvia said "Garlic frying in the pan", and that's honestly pretty high up there. Also the smell of coffee brewing, freshly-baked bread, and an Indian buffet. None of them stands out head-and-shoulders above the rest though.

8. Least favorite smell?

Garbage. Easy one. Just mixed-up general purpose garbage that's been sitting for awhile. I used to walk past a waste management facility every day on the way to work, where they park all the garbage trucks. There's a lot of things I miss about that walk, but the smell is definitely not one of them.

9. Exercise: worth it?

Physical activities that require exercise are worth it: walking, hiking, exploring, sex, building things, gathering things, gardening, some physical games and sports under the right circumstances. Exercise for its own sake, with no extrinsic motivation? Probably worth it in a cold objective sense, but you'll never convince my brain it is.

10. Window or aisle?

Window, but almost all of the times I've made this choice have been in the context of a bus ride. If I flew regularly, my answer might be different.

11. Cats or dogs?

I like both, but cats are easier to have as pets and require fewer resources to take care of. When my life circumstances allow for adopting a dog, I'm sure it'll be very rewarding.

12. Flat or sparkling?

I like flavored sparkling water, but unflavored sparkling water tastes like bitter nothing. I'd rather have regular nothing.

13. You get one song to listen to for the rest of your life: what is it?

My answer is Ishkur's The Longplay, a 15-hour compilation of electronic music through the decades. It counts as one song because it was released as one file and there are no gaps. If you disagree, then I don't have an answer. I'd rather listen to nothing than pick what song I'm eventually going to hate.

14. What do you think happens when we die?

Nothing. I mean, the anoxia makes our brains give us some dynorphin in our final moments. The failing optic nerve makes us see reality dissolve into white light. This might feel like a euphoric supernatural experience, which is hopefully pretty comforting. Then nothing.

15. Describe the rest of your life in 5 words.

Wizardry 1 through 7 completed
