A Lovely Harmless Monster

My Sunday shift was okay

It's always nice to be at the office by myself, but only having one day off is taking its toll. My brain wasn't ready to go back to the office yet. I did write a decent amount of a post, but it's not finished yet and I don't think I'll be able to finish it in the next two hours. My brain is slush. Hopefully having a 3-day weekend will be worth it.

Earlier Izzy and I were talking about the abuse of the word "ultimate" on youtube, like "The ultimate guide to such-and-such" that turns out to be very surface-level and not so ultimate after all. This made me think of The Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny. Wanna feel old? This video's in four by three.

The video's not so hot now, but by 2005 standards it was a masterpiece. More for the song than the animation. I never enjoyed the art style.

Well, when I looked it up, I learned that a couple years ago some fans got together and made a new video. The art is much better than the original, but they used a different version of the song, and it's worse! I mean, it's okay, but I really prefer the simpler arrangement of the original. Never once have I thought the problem with TUSoUD is that it doesn't have enough butt rock guitar. Plus, the vocals are too low in the mix and harder to make out. If someone could please make an edit of the original song with the new video, that would be good.

That was a little bit ago. Earlier, when I got home from work (late, because I was late going in, because I was the only one in the office today so it didn't matter) Sunny got in my lap and I pet her for a long time, which was nice. While this was going on, instead of finishing my blog post, I got stun-locked watching videos of a professional music guy reacting to music from classic video games. This is pure brainrot content for me--his explanations of music theory and keys and time signatures go completely over my head. I'm watching purely to see the music pro react with glee to music I like, and call it good and interesting. Here he is reacting to Streets of Rage 2, and here he is reacting to Chrono Trigger. I can't watch too much of this stuff because it's literally just watching someone make happy faces and validate me, and I get embarrassed about enjoying it. It's how I imagine it would feel if I found any videos I like on Tiktok. It never happened and I uninstalled the app, thank god. I got rid of it during the fake Tiktok ban in January and never looked back. Apparently the right kind of old video game content is my weak point.

I wonder if I should try to play Streets of Rage 2. I've enjoyed the soundtrack a great deal, but I've never played it because I don't like beat-em-ups that much. I wonder if I can enjoy a game purely for the music.

I didn't know there were any good multi-emulators with native Linux versions, but I found one. It's called Mesen. It's great, and it does nearly every machine I need, but not Megadrive/Genesis. It does just about every other big 8- and 16-bit console, it even does Turbografx, but no Sega love. I wonder why. Oh well. Maybe I should try to get into some Turbografx games. It's my big 16-bit blind spot. I did play a little bit of Bonk, it seems neat.

Anyway, just phoning in a blog post before midnight, because I can. Should hopefully finish up the bigger post tomorrow. Goodnight everyone
