Legacy of the Wizard is a better metroidvania for you than super metroid, less precision required and more fun tools, and jumping. Although, actually it isn't technically a- shush me it's a platforming maze game it's plenty metroidvania. And it was on MSX and Famicom and NES. It was originally named Dragon Slayer 4. There's a fan shrine: lsd4.info ... how was that most recently updated just yesterday???!!!
When Ys was new, it was more forgiving than its contemporaries. If you don't enjoy figuring out how to cheese the bosses then it's fine that you cheated. Ys 2 has more story. Some of the tropes got to me... T_T
Is Legacy of the Wizard figureoutable? I get the impression it's the kind of game you need a walkthrough in front of you to make any progress at all. That fan site is rad, though
Actually finishing Legacy of the Wizard can be a bit obtuse, but the exploration is good, and much progress can be made just by checking which character can use the item you just found or bought. If you can find an instruction booklet that's great. A list of item names is good enough. At the least, you should know that you're looking for crowns, which are the toughest treasure to find, and you will need them to get the Dragon Slayer sword.
The map is huge and you can get lost in it, but you've played old games before, this isn't your first rodeo.
But here's some tips: One of the wands only the cloaked hero can equip is a 'magic key,' this knowledge saves much grinding. But that's not until the 3rd or 4th dungeon section. Once you have all 4 crowns their power is unlocked, and pointy eared hero can use them to teleport!

Thanks, found a scan of the manual. I'll give it a go!
